Okay. Once you put on the diving gear, swim all the way out to the right FIRST. That way you don't have to fight the bubble streams. Dive all the way down and reach the trap. You should get it credited as an item. Then whether you run out of oxygen or not,return to the surface and give it to Cap'n Salty.
You can check to see if you already have the trap by clicking on the STAR tab at upper right. This will display your last few actions on the site, and should include "obtained lobster trap" or some such. Once you have the trap, there is NOTHING at the spot where it was located.
