Question: would like to scuba dive?

Answer #1:

The best way to start would be by stopping at your local dive shop and talking to them about it. There is no set price for a certification course, it all depends on what the dive shop thinks the market will bear.

That said, a general estimate would be to expect to pay anywhere from $250 to $500 for the course proper, and possibly another $150-250 for personal gear (mask/fins/snorkel/booties). That's about the minimum you can expect to pay just to get started.

If you should decide to buy your own scuba equipment you can expect to pay somewhere between $250 & $600 for a BC, anywhere from $500 to $1000 for a regulator with octopus & gauges, and anywhere from $300 to $1000 for a dive computer. Wetsuits will be around $200 and up while a drysuit could be anywhere from $500 to $1500. An aluminum tank costs in the neighborhood of $200, while steel is $300 to $400.

Then there are accessories like gear bags, knives, compasses, gloves, hoods, clips, retractors and other assorted doo-dads which all add up.

Nobody said diving was inexpensive.
